39/LieutenantLowercase.

The brief was to produce, direct, film, act in and edit a 60 second film combing a movie genre and a graphical term drawn at random from a hat.

Each film had to include three objects :
- an egg
- a ladder
- a cat

Have three lines of dialogue :
- “how much for the little one?”
- “see you next wednesday”
- “the most important thing in life is…”

and also include the word Chelsea somewhere.

This is the effort of Christian Jeffery, Jessie May Peters, Joshua Carpenter and myself with help (and many thanks to) from Mark Hawkins. It combines the movie genre War and the graphical term Lowercase. It follows the rescue of Lieutenant Lowercase having been captured by the deadly Vietcong.

Presenting Lieutenant Lowercase : The Last of Nine. Winner of Best Film, Best Special Effects and Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Chelsea School of Art and Design GDC1 Oscars 2010.

38/Pipedown#03.

Flyers and posters for third Pipedown night. This one done in collaboration with Matt Flynn who also runs Pipedown with me, key was making sure the theme continued from the previous flyers. The night itself is going to be ridiculous – Addison Groove, James Blake, Airhead, Xxxy are playing alongside ourselves and it’s free all night long. Details.

Anyway flyers after the jump or on Flickr.

37/AbundantPromo.

I’m currently doing a lot of work for Abundant, the company specialises in radio advertising and social media for films but also have their hand in lots of other, more creative pies. Amongst other things under their banner I’ve done illustrations for CBeebies and a website for new film Made In Dagenham. However, more aesthetically arresting is this promotional booklet.

Selected pages and clippings after the jump.

36/P/ptI.

Something I’m currently working on with Matt Flynn aka electronic b-b-b-b-bad-boii Sduk. The project is to develop and push a method of printing resulting in an edition of 50 prints, 12″ x 12″. Whilst much of the swing toward analogue printing methods is an attempt to capture “happy mistakes”, the digital world isn’t perfect; amongst the 0s and 1s it’s a messy place, there are mistakes there too. Using Photoshop to lose yourself three stone and gain the perfect skin complexion? Purr-leaze. Things look like they are going to turn toward fucking with code and the traditional output method of your digital console – the inkjet printer.

Here’s some of our inspiration : -

Screen Deconstruction (Q might be needed)
- Blackmoth.org
- Yvette’s
- One of many Angelfire sites

35/It’sAllAbout.

Flyer design for next It’s All About event. Daemonds gave me free reign on this one (only had to incorporate his logo) which was real nice. It’s also a line-up of the sickest DJs so get yourself down on July 23rd.

34/NS004/LilSilva.

Latest Night Slugs EP is Lil Silva’s Night Skanker, it’s out tomorrow, as usual I’ve done some work on possible concepts for the cover.

I’m having difficulties with ownership of work and people repeatedly saying it’s your ability to imagine an idea and not the technical skills to realise that idea that’s important. Ok, idea is key but when you hire photographer, illustrator, coder etc. to carry out said idea can you really claim ownership of the final product? In the art exhibition the artists work is always bigger than the curators but in graphic design it seems fame is reversed; designer plays role of curator, employs the artists and basks in the limelight. This seems to be pretty much most of the game at the moment. So much has to be said for development of an idea through process, ranging from mistakes made, a designers unique style and to pushing the boundaries of what a technology can actually do. I’m very much in the thought sphere that knowledge of technical process can only aid the creative outcome and not restrict it. With all that in mind I’m not sure how much ownership I can really take for these, at the end of the day it’s Alex’s vision that brings them to life. It’s also very much his direction and choice at the end of the day, hopefully my thoughts offer him something to spark off.

Anyway, key theme here was ENERGY which resulted in looking at the structure of dams. My ideas part i / part ii.

33/Dubb/R.A.P.

My brother raps / MCs / writes and performs poetry under the name Dubb. He had his debut album R.A.P. (Rhythm And Poetry) out sometime last year and after an initial push on digital sales, he’s just had a load of physical CDs pressed up. The album is (completely unbiased here) really, really good, he performs his unique style of lyric-concious rap meets poetry over beats solely created from the mouth of beatbox pioneer TYTE – in action here. You should buy it from here or on iTunes.

Anyway, I’ve done all the design for the whole thing, the identity extends to spaces like Bandcamp and Myspace. But most exciting is the physical CD which I only picked up last night; you can see it here. Words are at the centre of the album – he takes a light approach to language playing with words and their various meanings; the cover hopefully reflects that.

32/%255Colour.

Spent yesterday playing with Processing, following this. Here’s the result; I think you have to click the app to activate it but then it should work. At the moment it only follows the mouse whilst it’s within the boundaries of the app. Purely for aesthetic; enjoy.

31/Processing/FeedDeath.

Currently playing around with processing.org. It claims to close the gap between programmer and artist; each programme is a ’sketch’ rather than anything else, only had it open a day or two but the potential seems vast. More on the project I’m attempting to do with it later but here’s something I did today that started out as my code going very wrong.

This ’sketch’ takes information from the latest feed on guardian.co.uk, reorders the body text placed over the header and bleeds it down the screen window. The resulting pattern from the feed dying is completely different every time The Guardian posts a new bit of news; it can take information from pretty much any RSS feed on the web too.

30/Inspired/First.

An animated typography project, Inspired. We had to take a short passage of speech that has either inspired us or would inspire others and bring it to life. This is original turntablist Grandmaster Flash talking about being first, the transcript goes on and I really want to develop this further; we’ll see what happens.
